On Saturday, October 17th, and Sunday, October 18th, from noon to 5 p.m., tour Union County's historic buildings, including Summit's Carter House, Reeves-Reed Arboretum, Twin Maples, and Wallace Chapel A.M.E. Zionist Church.
During Four Centuries in a Weekend, come visit the historic Carter House, built in 1741. It houses our historical archive and collection of historical artifacts from the Summit’s history—from its earliest days before the American Revolution to the 1830s, when the first train arrived, to the present.
For National Parks lovers, the Carter House has its own unique Passport cancellation stamp, recognizing its inclusion in the National Heritage Area, which you can add to your National Parks Passport. Union County is one of 14 New Jersey counties that make up the National Park Service Crossroads of the Revolution National Heritage Area, which recognizes New Jersey's role in the American Revolution. Because the Union County area was one of the earliest regions to be settled, the Carter House is one of thirty Revolutionary War-era sites recognized as part of the National Heritage Area. Our unique cancellation stamp will be available to all guests during the weekend and at all other times the Carter House is open to visitors.
